The Muslims’ belief

Here is a very brief presentation on one of the main aspects of the belief in God: specifically the belief that He does not resemble His creations. If you think that you would like to know more about the belief of the Muslims, then do not hesitate to contact us via the following email address: Email address

In Surat Ibraaheem, there is a verse (verse 10):

  • أَفِى ٱللَّهِ شَكٌّ

  • “A fillaahi shakk” which means ‘There is no doubt about the existence of ALLAH

Our Prophet Muhammad sallaLLAAHU ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

  • كَانَ اللهُ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْءٌ غَيْرُه

  • “Kaanallahu wa lam yakun shay’un ghayruh” which means: ‘ALLAH has existed eternally and nothing else has existed eternally ‘. Narrated by al-Bukhari, al-Bayhaqi, Ibn al-Jarud and others.

Therefore ALLAH has always existed eternally and there was nothing else: no Paradise, no Hellfire, no earth, no sky, no human, no animal, no Throne, absolutely nothing.

He existed and there was nothing, and after He created the creations, this has not changed anything to His Self.

He informed us in the Qur’an that He does not need His creations. He said:

  •  فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

  • Fa innaLLAAHA ghaniyyun ‘ani l-‘aalameen which means ” Indeed ALLAH does not need these worlds” (surat Aal ‘Imraan verse 97)

What does that indicate to us? It indicates to us that ALLAH exists, that He has always existed, and that He does not need what He has created. Why would anyone say that after creating the Throne, the throne would have changed anything to the Self of ALLAH?

There is another sahih hadith narrated by Muslim  in which the Prophet sallaLLAAHU ‘ alayhi wa sallam said:

أنت الأول فليس قبلك شيء

أنت الآخر فليس بعدك شيء

أنت الظاهر فليس فوقك شيء

أنت الباطن فليس دونك شيء

Anta l-Awwal, fa laysa qablaKa shay’
Anta l-Aakhir fa-laysa ba’daKa shay’
Anta dh-Dhaahir fa-laysa fawqaKa shay
wa Anta l-Baatin fa laysa dunaKa shay’

which means:

You are al-Awwal, therefore there is nothing before You
You are al-Aakhir, therefore there is nothing after You
You are adh-Dhaahir, therefore there is nothing above You
You are al-BaaTin, therefore there is nothing below You

  • The first part of the hadith indicates that ALLAH has created time, and that He does not depend on time.
  • The second part of the hadith indicates that ALLAH has created places and that He does not depend on a place.

Do we say that after having created time, ALLAH will have an end? We do not! Would it be the case that after having created time, now ALLAH would depend on time? Of course not! Therefore why is it that some people say that after having created the Throne, this would have changed anything to ALLAH and that according to them ALLAH needs the Throne to establish Himself upon it or to sit on it, when this is the absolute opposite of the Muslims’ belief? And when we know that ALLAH does not need His creations?

He existed before places without being in need of the places, He is as He has always been;  His creations have not changed anything to His Self.

If you ever have the impression that there are , in the Qur’an, verses which seem to attribute a place to ALLAH, we strongly encourage you to have a look at the explanations of the scholars on this issue, present in this website, under the category “Interpretation of texts” (do not forget that the blog will be growing considerably in the near future in sha ALLAH).

THE ISLAMIC BELIEF IN ALLAAH IS PURE AND IT IS THE TRUTH: the Creator does not resemble His creations, He was already perfect before they existed, He existed and there was no time and no place, and after having created time and place, this has not changed anything to His Self.
